These DIY thermal mats are the perfect solution for all van fans who don't want to spend a lot of money on expensive thermal mats (or like to do DIY projects).
They help to optimise the van as they are insulating and shading the van at the same time.
Thanks to the sewn-in magnets, the thermal mats can be attached and removed in no time.
No screws required; and the magnetic thermal mats look good too.
Materials needed
- Windscreen cover
- Cotton wads 100 g / m²
- Cotton fabric
- Polyester tape
- Sew-in magnets
Make templates and cut the material
First, I made a paper template each for the back and sliding doors of our van. Then I cut the windscreen cover, the cotton wads, and the cotton fabric according to the templates. Please note that I allowed for an additional 5 mm for the seam. Each thermal mat has three layers: a windscreen cover for cars (with a silvery side), a double cotton wad layer, and a printed cotton fabric.
Pin the magnets
Then I attached the sew-in magnets on the silvery side of the cut windscreen cover. I left a 5 mm distance to the edge so the polyester tape can be sewed on later. Before I started sewing, I placed the cover on the windows to check the position of the magnets. We have electrical cables on the edge of our van windows that lead to the heating elements. Once the positioning of the magnets is good, you can sew them in.Hem the edges of the magnetic thermal mats
For the finish I pinned a dark blue polyester tape to the edges of the thermal mats and sewed it on carefully. I always took care not to sew over the magnets by mistake. For us it was helpful to mark the upper edge of the two magnetic thermal mats, as this helps us to attach them to the window panes.
That's it! It's that easy to make your own individual magnet thermal mats.
In summer the mats help us to keep the heat out of our van.
In winter, on the other hand, they ensure that the cold stays outside as much as possible.
And even if it's not particularly hot or cold outside, the magnetic thermal mats always help us to darken our van at night.
