Create Halloween lighting with tea lights and magnets

Halloween is just around the corner, and what could be scarier than mummies that glow? These versatile lights with magnets are not only easy to make but, thanks to their magnetic support, they can also be attached to any metal surface. They create a spooky atmosphere and are ideal for parties or as Halloween lighting for window decorations.

Crafting mummy tea lights

Materials needed

A small PET bottle (330 ml or similar)
UHU adhesive
Neodymium pot magnet with threaded stud, e.g. type GTN-16
Neodymium hook magnet, e.g. type BD-FTN-16
Hex nuts M4
Box cutter
LED candles
Self-adhering bandage in white
Googly eyes

Prep work for the Halloween lighting

Remove the label from the PET bottle, then cut off the top of the bottle with a box cutter. Place your cut so that you are left with approx. 10 cm of bottle height. Additionally, pick a spot in the bottle body for the magnet assembly and use the carpet knife to cut a hole in the desired location.

Mummifying the magnetic tea lights

Now wrap the cohesive bandage around the body of the bottle to create a mummy-like effect. Perfection is not required here; the wrapping can have gaps and shouldn’t have too many layers to ensure the light still shines through. Next, use the adhesive to attach the googly eyes where you see fit. A particularly funny look is achieved if the googly eyes are of different sizes.

Lastly, place the LED tealights inside your holder to create a wonderfully spooky atmosphere.

Note from the supermagnete team: For safety reasons, we recommend using LED candles rather than real tea lights, as the plastic can melt.

Next, display your Halloween light with the help of the pot magnet with threaded stud. Simply push the stud through the prepared hole and use a nut to fasten the magnet. The suggested magnet requires an M4 nut.

Instead of the pot magnet with threaded stud, you can also use hook magnets. For example, you could choose the neodymium hook magnet type BD-FTN-16.

Now you can attach your Halloween lighting to ferromagnetic surfaces, such as refrigerator doors or railings. Thanks to the magnets, the lights will stay securely in place.

Alternatively, the Halloween lights can also be hung. To do this, pierce a hole in the plastic on the left and right side of the container and attach a string. With the hook magnet, you can now hang the finished light from a metal shelf, for example.

Tip: If you use coloured PET bottles, their colour will shine through the self-adhering bandage to some extent. It will give each mummy its own character. In addition to mummies, green PET bottles can also be used to create angry green monsters. These mummies and monsters can not only be used as scary Halloween lights but also as vases for lightweight flowers or grasses. (Please consider the maximum displacement force of the pot magnets in relation to the weight.)
