What are neodymium, ferrite and AlNiCo magnets made of?

In our web shop we sell permanent NdFeB, ferrite and AlNiCo magnets in various sizes and shapes. All types of magnets stand out due to different features.
Table of Contents

Neodymium iron boron (NdFeB)

Neodymium is the strongest material known for producing permanent magnets.
Our super strong magnets are made of a composition of neodymium, iron and boron (NdFeB). The exact chemical formula is Nd2Fe14B. Neodymium magnets differentiate themselves from conventional ferrite magnets through a much higher remanence and coercive field strength.

  • Grade: varies (exact values under physical magnet data)

  • Density: 7,4 - 7,6 g/cm3
  • Electrical resistance R: 1,4 - 1,6 μΩ m
  • Hardness: 570 HV
  • Max. working temperature: Standard: 80° C (up to 220° C possible)
  • Pollutants: All products are RoHS-compliant

Ferrite magnets

Ferrite magnets, which are also called ceramic magnets, are commonly known as "refrigerator magnets". They are the most used permanent magnets worldwide, because they are very cheap to produce and heat and corrosion resistant. They are uncoated and are dark grey in colour.
We carry affordable ferrite magnets in disc, block and ring shape.

  • Grade: Y35 (exact values under physical magnet data)
  • Magnetisation: anisotropic
  • Density: 5,2 g/cm3
  • Electrical resistance R: 106 Ω m
  • Hardness HV: 480 - 580 HV
  • Max. working temperature: 250° C
  • Pollutants: All products are RoHS-compliant

Buy ferrite magnets
Generally, you differentiate between two material mixtures for ferrite magnets, but we only carry the non-hazardous strontium ferrite.

Tip:: Not sure whether you should use a neodymium or ferrite magnet for your project? In our FAQ Should I buy a ferrite or neodymium magnet?, we compare the characteristics of both magnet types which will help you in your decision.

Aluminium nickel cobalt (AlNiCo)

We sell AlNiCo magnets (chemical formula AlNiCo5) exclusively for school experiments. AlNiCo has only a low adhesive force and loses its magnetisation relatively easily. But you can shape this material into fancy shapes, like horseshoe magnets.

  • Grade: LNG37
  • Magnetisation: anisotropic
  • Density: 7,3 g/cm3
  • Max. energy product: 4,65 MGOe
  • Coercive field strength bHc: 48 kA/m
  • Max. working temperature: 500° C
  • Pollutants: All products are RoHS-compliant
